It has been a busy start to the year for the Hartley Law team – our January was stamped with a prominent ‘B’ as we crafted our first-ever B Corp Impact Report.
It is easy to forget how much work goes into one year, especially as time seems to fly by so fast these days. Taking the time to sit back and reflect on our journey as a B Corp since becoming certified, has been a wonderful reminder of the impact we are having as a firm.
A project with purpose
Hartley Law was a project with purpose from the very start; founded with an ambition of doing good, and the aim of creating a legacy business – with the future of law in mind. To us, becoming a B Corp seemed like the natural next step in our journey.
Our B Corp Assessment
Our first year of certification has served as a reflection of the work we have done so far, and as we move into 2025 as a firm we have set goals for improvements in the areas assessed by B Corp, ahead of our recertification.
Hartley Law scored an exceptional 91.5 in our first assessment – with the median score for ordinary businesses currently sitting at 50.9. The overall score assesses several areas such as environment, customers, governance, community and workers. With our highest scores in community and workers for 2024, we are now looking to improve our scores in the clients and environment areas as we look to recertification – while maintaining our fantastic scores across the board.
Hartley Law’s Goals For Recertification
Our goal for recertification is 95, and to reach it we have made a number of commitments. Some of our most notable goals include providing environmental awareness training for all staff, setting client satisfaction targets with clear feedback mechanisms, establishing charitable objectives for colleagues, ensuring diversity is ingrained across every activity throughout our operations and collaborating with fellow B Corps who are actively serving underserved communities.
The B Corp Family
Aligning with so many like-minded businesses around the globe and becoming part of a community of people whose aim is to do good has proved rewarding in more ways than one. Not only are we inspired daily by incredible organsations, but we are connected to them, we are able to consistently learn from one another and bring those learnings to life through how we do business. Together, we are working to meet and maintain high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
Currently, only 26 law firms are officially certified by B Lab in the UK – that’s a shocking 0.28% of total firms – and only 75 worldwide. While we are incredibly proud to be part of this small group leading the change for good within the legal industry, we would like to encourage other law firms to consider becoming certified.
Together we can truly make a difference, and ensure a fair, sustainable, transparent, good world, for future generations.
